Queries are organized the same way as dashboards and widgets, from a Manage Categories panel that slides in from the right of the Queries listing. From it you can create, rename, nest, share, and delete categories, and file queries into them by dragging.
A query can belong to any number of categories at once, and it always remains in the full query catalogue at the bottom of the panel. Filing a query does not take it out of that catalogue, which is what lets you drag the same query onto a second and third category.
Open the Category Manager
Step 1: Select Queries from the navigation pane on the left, then open the Queries tab.
Step 2: Click the category filter dropdown at the top of the listing (it reads All by default) and choose Manage Categories. The panel slides in from the right.

The panel is one continuous listing. Categories sort to the top, the queries filed under each one nest inside it, and everything in the catalogue sits at the root below a divider. Press Escape or click the X in the panel header to close it.
Note: The panel is only available to users whose role grants category permissions. Without permission to list categories, the Manage Categories entry does not appear.
Create a Category
Click Add new category (+) at the top of the panel. A modal window will appear requesting a name for your new category. Enter a name of your choice and click Add or hit Enter.
Category names must be unique within the same level. Reusing a name that already exists alongside it returns an error.
The recording below runs the whole flow end to end: creating the category, dragging two queries onto it, and the category tag appearing on those rows in the listing behind the panel. Note that both queries stay in the catalogue at the bottom of the panel after being filed.

Manage a Category
Hovering over a category row reveals its controls, and the gear icon opens the following options:
- Rename
- Add subcategory
- Move to top level
- Remove

Move to top level only appears on a subcategory. It is the reliable way to un-nest one, since dragging a category out of its parent needs empty space below the tree to aim at.
Add Subcategory
Click the gear icon of an existing category and select Add subcategory, then enter a name and click Add or hit Enter. Alternatively, click the (+) on the category row to go straight to the same dialog.
You can also nest an existing category by dragging it onto another one. Dragging it onto the empty space around the listing moves it back to the top level.
Rename Category
Click the gear icon of an existing category and select Rename. Enter the new name and click Rename.
Remove Category
Click the gear icon of an existing category and select Remove, then confirm. Removing a category also removes every category nested inside it. The queries themselves are not deleted: they stay in the catalogue and simply lose that filing.
Share a Category
Click the share icon on a category row to open the standard sharing dialog. Query categories share exactly like dashboard and widget categories, with the same View, Edit, and Deny permissions described under Category Roles & Permissions.
Assign a Category
Drag & Drop
Drag a query from the catalogue at the bottom of the panel onto a category to file it there, as shown in the recording under Create a Category above. The listing supports the following moves:
| Drag | Onto | Result |
|---|---|---|
| A query from the catalogue | A category | Files it there, keeping any categories it is already in |
| A query already filed in a category | Another category | Moves that filing to the other category |
| A query already filed in a category | The empty space around the listing | Removes it from that category |
| A category | Another category | Nests it as a subcategory |
| A subcategory | The empty space around the listing | Moves it back to the top level |
To take a query out of a category without dragging, click the gear icon on the filed query row and select Remove from category. Rows in the catalogue at the root have no gear icon, since they belong to no category for that action to apply to.
Query Settings
While creating a new query or editing an existing one, navigate to Settings and assign categories from the Categories dropdown. It is a multiselect, so you can file the query into several categories at once. Once the categories are assigned, click Save Dataset.

Search
The search box at the top of the panel filters the whole listing at once, matching both category names and query names, including matches inside collapsed categories.
Categories on the Query Listing
Each query row in the listing carries a tag for every category it belongs to, so you can see its filing at a glance. Tags update as soon as a query is filed or removed, with no need to reload the page.

To see only the queries in one category, select it from the category filter dropdown at the top of the listing.
